What is Injection Molding?

Injection molding is a manufacturing process that injects molten plastic material into a mold cavity and forms the desired plastic part after cooling and solidification. In simple terms, it is to heat plastic particles to a molten state and then inject them into the mold with high pressure. The shape of the mold determines the shape of the final product.

The process is a bit like making chocolate: you pour melted chocolate into the mold, and when it cools, it will take the shape of the mold. The advantage of injection molding is that it can efficiently produce plastic parts with complex shapes and precise dimensions, which is suitable for mass production, such as plastic bottle caps, toys, electronic housings, etc.

Its core equipment is the injection molding machine, which mainly includes a barrel, a screw, a mold, and a control system. By precisely controlling temperature, pressure, and time, the consistency of each part can be ensured.

DFM (Design for Manufacturability) optimization enables efficient production of high-precision, complex-shaped plastic products.

Let's look at the SPI mold classification

A 101-grade mold has a life of more than 1 million cycles and is designed for mass production. This mold is made of top-grade materials (such as H13 or S7 steel), precision machined and heat treated for high precision and long life. 101-grade molds are the highest grade of molds and are often referred to as Class I tools.

Multi-cavity steel molds with fully automated systems and 24-hour production capabilities are used for high-precision, high-volume manufacturing of specialized parts, such as critical automotive components or high-end medical devices.

A 102-grade mold has a life of between 500,000 and 1 million cycles and is  for medium and large-scale production. It uses high-quality steel and has high manufacturing precision, but costs less than a 101-grade mold.

Medium-scale steel molds for the production of household appliances or industrial parts, mass production with certain precision requirements.

The 103 grade mold life is between 100,000 and 500,000 cycles, and is suitable for medium-volume production. It uses medium-quality steel, is low-cost, and is suitable for manufacturing parts that do not require high precision.

Molds used to produce consumer products or general industrial parts to meet medium- and short-term production needs.

The life of 104-grade molds is less than 100,000 times, and can only be used for small-scale production or prototype development. Usually low-cost steel (such as P20) is used, and the manufacturing cycle is short, which is suitable for short-term use.

Molds for trial production or small-scale production, rapid verification of design or short-term projects.

The 105-grade mold has a life of less than 500 cycles and can only be used for very short-term production or prototype verification. Usually made of aluminum or low-carbon steel, it is the lowest cost and suitable for rapid prototyping.

Molds used for rapid prototyping or very small batch trial production, design verification or short-term testing needs.

Injection Molding Other Types

Secondary molding

Overmolding is an injection molding process that combines two different materials together. First, one material is molded as a base, and then the second material is injected into the same mold or another mold to make it tightly bonded to the base.

This process is often used to make soft and hard parts, such as toothbrush handles (hard plastic + soft rubber) or tool grips, which can enhance functionality and improve user experience.

Insert molding

Insert molding is the process of placing a metal or plastic insert into a mold in advance, and then wrapping the plastic material around the insert through injection molding to form an integrated part.

This process is widely used in electronic connectors, automotive parts, and medical devices, and can achieve high-strength, multifunctional designs while reducing assembly steps and improving production efficiency.

Surface treatment and molding materials

Mold tools and molding materials

Mold tools are the core of injection molding, and their design and manufacturing directly affect the precision and quality of the product. We provide mold development services that meet SPI standards, covering the entire process from prototype molds to mass production molds. Molding materials include a variety of engineering plastics (such as ABS, PC, PP, PA, POM, PEEK, etc.), which can meet the functional and appearance requirements of different industries. Whether it is a simple two-plate mold or a complex hot runner mold, we can customize it according to customer needs to ensure efficient production and high-quality finished products.

Surface treatment

Surface treatment is a key step to improve the appearance and performance of injection molded parts. We provide a variety of surface treatment processes, including polishing, sandblasting, electroplating, anodizing, powder coating, etc. These treatments not only improve the appearance and texture of the parts, but also enhance their wear resistance, corrosion resistance and functionality. For example, medical parts can achieve a high finish through polishing, while automotive parts can improve durability through electroplating. We choose the appropriate treatment method according to customer needs to ensure that each part achieves the best effect.

Injection Molding FAQs

Shrinkage or sinking is usually caused by uneven cooling or insufficient holding pressure. Solutions include optimizing the cooling system, increasing holding time and pressure, or adjusting material temperature.

Flash is usually caused by loose mold closure or too high injection pressure. It can be solved by checking mold wear, adjusting mold clamping force or reducing injection pressure.

The key to improving dimensional accuracy lies in optimizing mold design, controlling injection molding process parameters (such as temperature, pressure, cooling time) and selecting suitable materials.

Jeek ensures fast delivery from design to finished product through efficient mold design, advanced injection molding equipment, and optimized production processes, and prototypes can usually be completed within 7 working days.
