What is CNC Turning?

CNC turning is a highly efficient CNC machining process that uses linear tool paths on a CNC lathe to remove material from a rotating workpiece to achieve precision machining. The core of the process includes a rotating spindle that clamps the workpiece and a cutting tool mounted on a turret.

Main Processes of CNC Turning

External and internal turning
Machining cylindrical features to ensure dimensional stability. The machined parts can be further processed and have visible tool marks. Common tools: universal turning tools.

End machining
Flat cutting of the end of the workpiece to improve surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Common tools: end machining tools.

Parting and slotting
Separate the part from the workpiece, or cut the groove profile inside or outside the part to create a geometric shape. Common tools: cutting and slotting blades.

 

Boring and reaming
These processes are used to enlarge or finish existing holes, often applied in the machining of high-precision assembly parts. Common tools used: Boring and reaming tools.

Drilling
The function is to remove material and machine through or blind holes inside the workpiece, often used in a variety of part structures. Common tools: drill bits.

Threading
Precisely cut threads in the internal or external areas of the workpiece to meet the needs of fasteners or mating structures. Common tools: threading tools.

CNC Turning FAQs

CNC turning can process a variety of metal and plastic materials, including aluminum alloys, stainless steel, titanium alloys, brass, copper, engineering plastics, etc. Different materials are suitable for different applications, such as aluminum alloys for lightweight components, while stainless steel is suitable for parts with high corrosion resistance requirements.

The tolerance of turned parts can usually reach ±0.01mm or even higher. The specific accuracy depends on the material properties, tool type and machine tool performance.

CNC turning is mainly suitable for rotationally symmetrical parts, the workpiece rotates, and the tool cuts the material along a specific path; while CNC milling is suitable for complex 3D structures, the tool rotates, and the workpiece is usually fixed or moves a small amount.
